Somatic therapy is a treatment focusing on the body and the influence of our breath on our emotions and our emotions on our breath. It posits that our body holds emotions, traumatic events or unresolved emotional issues which can become 'trapped' inside.
During the session we address emotions through activating your nervous system and putting the body into "fight or flight" state, allowing repressed emotions and feelings to surface. The emotions can stem from a variety of conditions and circumstances but doesn't necessarily have to be intense or traumatic:
The goal is to lessen their influence, easing issues like muscle tension, disrupted sleep, or difficulty concentrating. When it comes to mental health and well-being, studies indicate that engaging in somatic practices supports emotional regulation and aids individuals in processing and releasing pent-up emotions.
Please reach us at if you cannot find an answer to your question.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapies focus on conscious thought and work on challenging thoughts in relation to anxiety and behaviours, helping desensitize people to uncomfortable sensations. Somatic therapy is more about relieving the tension, as opposed to desensitizing people to it. You are not required to share your issue or traumatic event with me, as we are focusing on bodily sensations mainly.
Each session is tailored to you, however here is the brief outline of the session:
- Review of contraindications
- Understanding your needs and expectations out of the session
- Grounding
- Start of the breathwork (50 mins)
- Integration after the breathwork
- Feedback
I would not recommend practising Somatic Bodywork more than 1 time per week for females / 2 times for males. Depending on your lifestyle, you are already getting stressed with your everyday life, and your body releases a lot of cortisol. While it is not as damaging for male body, prolonged periods of stress can disrupt the balance of female hormones, making Breathwork sessions counterproductive.
Additionally, practising it every day is like going for therapy every day – it doesn’t give your body and mind the needed time to integrate the experiences and insights gained from the session. Without proper integration, the profound experiences and shifts that occur during Breathwork might remain isolated occurrences, failing to leave a lasting impact.
Breathwork induces hypo-oxygenation of cells, causing your bloodstream to be enriched with more oxygen than usual. This naturally heightens sensitivity in the body, leading to physical sensations like shivering or tension, alterations in body temperature, and the emergence of memories and emotions. These reactions are considered normal and essential for the release of emotions.
While numerous practitioners emphasize the aspects of release, catharsis, and vocal expression, it’s important to recognize that these elements constitute just a single facet of the overall journey. I will guide you from catharsis to a state of profound pleasure. Within this state, you can learn to savour your physical presence, embrace self-acceptance and forgiveness, and allow life-force energy to flow freely.
No preparation is required, however avoid coffee or stimulant 4 hours before the session, refrain from eating heavy meal 2h before the session and do not drink alcohol 24 hours before and after the practice.
